Gates Carbon Drive belts are made with stretch-free carbon fiber tensile cords. The advanced urethane technology thus allows the belt to be weather resistant, flexible, and durable. Although Gates engineers have developed high performance belt drives for thousands of  industrial applications, Gates developed an entirely new belt to specifically meet performance requirements for the bicycle industry.

  • Carbon fiber as the base technology gives the highest modulus and strength
  • Urethane body is rust-proof, even after 192 hours of salt-spray test
  • Unlike chain, carbon fiber is length-stable and will not stretch
  • 11 mm pitch profile provides optimal belt drive performance to meet the demands of human power
  • Paired with Gates sprockets, the system provides smooth and quiet meshing, and proven durability

Proper installation of the 122 Tooth CDX Belt Black is key; view the Owner’s Manual for more information.

THREE KEYS WHEN WORKING WITH CARBON DRIVE

HANDLING:

Gates Carbon Drive belts are highly durable. They offer long life when properly handled. However, caution must be used during installation to avoid damaging the carbon tensile cords.  When they experience excessive bending and twisting, this creates crimps, which can lead to belt breakage.

Because of the risk of damage, in handling the belt, you must NOT:

– back bend
– use as a chainwhip
– bundle
– crimp
– twist, or
– invert

ALIGNMENT:

Alignment is critical. Hence, depending on the bike and setup, you may need to use spacers to ensure proper alignment. Noise, wear, or belt walk-off can be caused by sprockets that are out of alignment.

TENSIONING:

Proper belt tension is needed for optimum operation. However, for frames with vertical dropouts, changing a flat tire does not mean you need to retension your belt. Tensioning is easy with the Gates Carbon Drive iPhone app (available through iTunes). You can also use the Carbon Drive Krikit Gauge or ecotension tester (available in Europe). Low tension can cause the belt to skip, leading to decreased performance, while high tension can cause drag and unnecessary wear.

TENSIONING RECOMMENDATIONS
SMOOTH & STEADY PEDALING STYLE PUNCHY & ROUGH PEDALING STYLE
MOUNTAIN & SS URBAN 45-60 Hz (35-45 lbs) 60-75 Hz (45-53 lbs)
INTERNALLY GEARED HUB 35-50 Hz (28-40 lbs) 35-50 Hz (28-40 lbs)

These tension recommendations provide a good starting point. However, you may need to adjust the value higher or lower to reflect rider size, gear ratios, or power placed on the pedals.
